Selvedge Winter Fair 2015

The Selvedge Winter Fair is an annual event for me and my chums. It’s the perfect start to the Festive Season.

The stands were set out a little differently his year giving the stall holders even more space to hang their fabulous goodies.

The fair a wonderful venue to meet our favourite Textile artists, and gleen a bit of inspiration from some stunning handmade products.

Of course we need to browse and maybe buy a goody or two. I bought some yummy pieces and caught up with quite a few textile friends from Facebook and Instagram.

I am so happy with these goodies!

After the Fair, we wondered over to the V&A for tea and took in the wintry sights on the way back to the Tube.

‘Apron Strings!’ Exhibition by Connie Flynn

‘Apron Strings!’, a solo exhibition by Connie Flynn at Courtyard Arts.
I’d heard about this exhibition only last week so I was keen to see it before it closed.
I purposely hadn’t read too much about it before visiting so I had no preconceived ideas about what to expect other than embroidered aprons (which in itself is wonderful). How wrong was I. I was blown away with her work. Enjoy.

The pieces below are half aprons – the rectangular kind with ties that wrap around the waist. These pieces have been worked on both sides using every textile material to hand, from hand made felt to re-purposed tea towels.

I had a good chat with Connie about her past and future exhibitions. I suggest getting in contact with her if you want to know more (her work is a breath of fresh air). She also offers workshops – I was a quick to add my name to her mailing list! Connie is a very gifted lady and I have a feeling we will be hearing more about her in years to come.

The Festival of Quilts 2015 – Part Two – Traditional Quilts

The quilts in this category were beautiful and the standard was as high as ever. Traditional patchwork techniques were demonstrated in abundance on each quilt – applique, piecing, hand & machine quilting. Being able to examine the quilts up close, I could see the skill and appreciate the hours of work that went into each and every single stitch. These are the kind of quilts I aspire to make. I am full of admiration for the dedicated needle women who made them. I stopped making large bed quilts in 2011. A change in job and a re-evaluation on life altered my creative journey. I stopped quilting and started embroidery. These wonderful quilts have inspired me to take up the rotary cutter and quarter inch sewing foot once more. I am looking forward to making my new quilt.
