Darning Sampler – My first thought on the Members’ Challenge ‘Layers’ theme was of threads crossing and layering over each other and planned to create an artwork that combined two of my favourite things, intricate stitch work and red thread.

The inspiration came from a little antique darning sampler in my collection. I wanted to make a sampler of my own and chose a vintage brushed cotton child’s garment to embellish with the stitches.

Using the vintage sampler as a starting point with a few variations of my own, I created a bank of stitches drawn out onto graph paper.

An early challenge was the brushed cotton surface which needed to be completely de-fuzzed to expose the cloth’s weave.

I sampled a few threads on the reverse of the garment to see which weight of thread worked best and settled on a Madeira Cotona in red and then cut out small pieces of paper about 2-inch square and pinned them over the garment to get an idea of the composition.

Size 28 x 28 cm approximately. Hand stitched Madeira thread, vintage child’s cotton garment. Mother of Pearl button added to the neckline in a red thread.

Embroidery Magazine September 2023

I’m pleased to announce that an article about my hand embroidered work has been published in the Embroidery Magazine September 2023 issue.

The process started a few months ago with an enquiry from the magazine followed by an interview, about my journey into textiles, with artist and journalist Ellen Bell.

We chatted about my design process and several artworks including Accrington Pals, and Sylko Addict.

Bunting, Butties and a Brew

In the year we crowned our new monarch, the Embroiderers’ Guild has designed a royal themed members’ project to share at the Knitting and Stitching Shows in 2023. ‘Fit for a King’ is the name of the exhibition and my contribution ‘Bunting, Butties and a Brew’ is a new piece of work, designed and stitched especially for exhibition.

About ‘Bunting, Butties and a Brew’:

With any royal celebration, my family has a long-established tradition that involves bunting, vintage china and a cake stand.  This year was no different as London was transformed for the coronation of our new monarch and his queen.

We celebrated with our pile of butties cut into triangles (crusts off), a Victoria Sponge cake, a freshly brewed pot of tea and individual trifles served in vintage glassware – and then toasted our king with a chilled glass of bubbly.

The hand embroidered panel is 12 x 23.5cm. The artwork is entirely hand embroidered and stitched with a variety of vintage Sylko threads.
