Alexandra Palace........ inspiration from a by gone era....

I am sure you have heard of or have visited Alexandra Pale in London.... the first home of BBC TV.

Recently the Palace have been running behind the scenes tours, explaining the history and development of the Palace from conception to what we know today.

Here are some behind the scenes at the lesser known  Victorian Alexandra Palace Theatre  which is in a state of decay .... I had to share the fantastic paintwork with you.....the patterns, painting paint and decor are a joy to see....

Original woven carpet from the entrance to the theatre

The ceilings are held reinforced with timber to protect it from falling down.

Upper gallery and all the walls are covered in Trompe l'oeil

Part of the basement was turned over to housing a 'camp' in WW1 for interned civilians. There are plans afoot to open this to the public during the time of the WW1 Centenary.

What kind of Stitcher are you?

Hand embroidery and free-motion quilting are forms of stitching that I tend to revert back to time and again. In the case of free motion quilting, I try to make a stitch that works for me and one that comes naturally.

In all the years I have taught Machine Quilting, I have noticed that one tends to be a 'angular, zig-zag' person, a 'wiggly, irregular' stitch person or a 'spiral, wavy' person - it all depends how your arms, shoulders and brain work together..... you are what you are.

It took me quite a few years of quilt-making to accept, not fight it anymore and be very content with being the Spiral and Wavy girl that I am. Subsequently I now understand my constant fascination with spirals, knotting and how forms overlay and cross one another.

A very useful bit of vintage kit....

Vintage, small brass covered safety pins are a staple piece of kit in my projects.....

Small vintage brass safety pins
.... some are given pride of place in my work, incorporated in mixed media design and embroidery art..... some are used the old fashion way as fasteners on the back of pieces...... My favourite use is utilising them as a 'pin' to hang found objects from..... a very versatile piece of kit.

Rust, Rust and more Rust.....

Salty sea air and metal are a perfect combination to create the most stunning specimens of rust, especially if the surfaces are painted!

Rusty Gears on machinery are perfect inspiration for my future textile projects.....

Sea, sand and chips

A holiday to the quaint seaside town of Aldeburgh is truly rewarding. My cravings for fish, chips and ice-cream are completely satisfied and my mind is cleared by the fresh sea air.... lots of beach combing to be had too!
